Wendy Newton

Qualified through the world renowned and accredited Scottish Tourist Guide Association as a Green Badge Guide specialist for the North Highlands.

My family has been working the land in Scotland for generations, historically as sheep and cattle farmers, but the new generations have turned to golf and hospitality for their careers. I was a little different and after gaining a Master's degree in Engineering I travelled the world working on many different and interesting projects. When a posting brought me back to the Highlands just like Robert Burns said, our hearts wouldn't let us leave again and we made our forever family home in Caithness.

Living in a county with an incredible and diverse history, I have an strong interest in archaeology, taken part in a number of 'digs' and have a Master’s Degree in Classics so can interpret the human-created and natural features of our landscape for you. I spend my sparetime researching and collecting stories of highland life, both historical and modern and I will enjoy sharing these with you.  I am also a qualified Genealogist, specialising, of course in Scottish families and can help you research your Scottish ancestors before or during a visit.

My decades of experience as a cruise ship passenger, taking excursions on port visits has given me an insight into making the most of a day ashore so let me help you get the most out of shore-time.  You will have great stories to share at dinner after a day ashore with me. For those with a little more time and arriving in the highlands by other methods, I can design an itinerary to help you experience the ‘must-sees’ as well as those interesting little places that larger tours can't get to.

I am a Scots Gaelic speaker, although I guide with a clear 'English RP' accent so you will have no trouble understanding me. If you'd like to try Gaelic, I'd be delighted to share a few phrases.
