James Dunbar CPD
Based in : Boat of Garten, Inverness-shire
Languages spoken : ENGLISH, German

½ day / 1 day / extended / year-round

Specialities: Land Management, Farming, Forestry, Community Matters, IT

I started guiding in the mid 1980s and since then have largely dealt with German-speaking groups from Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the occasional English group. Back then these were mainly 7-day+ coach tours covering much of the UK but particularly Scotland (or Ireland) supplemented by occasional small driver guiding or larger incentive groups. Nowadays coach tours are shorter and concentrate more on Scotland and shore excursions from cruise ships calling at Scottish ports provide me with increasing business.
Whilst a guide is a jack of all trades my personal interests are Land Management/Farming/Forestry, Community Matters and IT.

I am a qualified Scottish Tour Guide Association Regional Affiliate.

Angela MacRae CPD
Based in : Inverness
Languages spoken : GERMAN, English, Spanish, French

½ day / 1 day / extended

I was born in Germany and studied Spanish and French (translating/interpreting) at University. After spending one year at the Université de Nice in France I moved to Spain where I worked for 6 years in tourism and language teaching. The Highlands have been my home for more than 25 years now and all the time I have been involved in teaching languages especially English for Speakers of other languages. History and culture are closely related to the language and so it is a privilege to share Highland heritage with visitors from many different nations. How could one possibly resist the charm of the Highlands with the breath-taking landscapes, the mountains and glens, the rivers and lochs and the quaint little villages? Come and experience the rich history and modern day life. Hope to see you soon in the Highlands of Scotland! Bis bald in den Highlands! ¡Hasta pronto! A bientôt!

Alastair Cunningham CPD

Day Coach and half-day; Driver Guiding

Specialities: Driver Guide, Castles, Prehistory
I have a great interest in the early Celtic peoples of Scotland and that romantic era before the Battle of Culloden when clan chiefs controlled the Highlands. My specialities are castles, battle sites and clan lands. I wrote the guidebook for Dunnottar Castle and the Colin Baxter book on Clans and Tartans. Having spent many years in the Highlands, I now live in the Borders and provide driver/guiding all over Scotland. Winter months are spent arranging holidays for those visiting their clan lands or staying in Scottish castles. I write an occasional blog: Living with Clans and Castles.

Elspeth McLean CPD
Based in : Edinburgh
Languages spoken : ENGLISH, French, British Sign Language level 2

Day and half-day tours, year-round.

I was born and have lived most of my life in the Highlands, although raised and educated in other areas of Scotland too, from the Orkney Isles to Edinburgh where I am now based. My family roots tap into Scotland’s rich traditional heritage. The whisky stills you see in many of the famous Scottish distilleries were once made by my grandfather whose company name still appears on them all. My love of the outdoors and playing golf came from my Highland golf professional grandfather in Dornoch. I grew up in a family of bagpipe players and enjoy music, learning fiddle and clarsach (Scottish harp).

I’ve many years experience as a tour designer, creating and organising personal special interest tours of Scotland, Ireland and France including Outlander tours.

It’s a real pleasure meeting people and a delight to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of Scotland’s history, culture, legends, secrets and natural beauty with visitors.

Day and half-day tours.

Born and raised in southern Scotland, I have lived in the Highlands for more than 30 years, where I have worked for both the National Trust for Scotland (at Culloden Battlefield) and for the Highland Council, building my local knowledge and developing a keen interest in all things Highland, old and new. I have long enjoyed sharing my love of this beautiful area with visitors from different parts of the world.

Caroline Cameron CPD – Committee Member (Lectures and Outings)
Based in : Tain, Ross & Cromarty
Languages spoken : ENGLISH

Day and half-day tours, year-round.  Specialities: Archaeology/Prehistory, Folklore & Music, Natural world, Scottish History

Born and brought up in the Highlands I am passionate about all things Scottish and just love any opportunity to share this with visitors. The beauty, the history, an insight into everyday life past and present and of course the legends. Nothing like a good story to give a flavour of the place and the people. I love to show Scotland’s historical landmarks as well as the many, many hidden gems that are out there to be discovered and enjoyed.

I was a teacher in the Highlands. I chose a career in education because I wanted to share knowledge, because I love working with people and because I like to entertain, they do say teaching is not far removed from acting! I love meeting new people.

My other interests include travel, walking, theatre, reading, cooking, entertaining and gardening.

Sandra MacIver CPD – Committee Member

Day Coach, Extended Coach, Driver Guiding, Wildlife, Walking
Specialities: local history, landscape, land use

Born and bred on a family farm then educated in Moray I spent most of my life there although my work took me throughout the Grampian Region. I worked for over 35 years in different aspects of Scottish Law. I am passionate about encouraging visitors to see and experience the best (not necessarily the most expensive) about Scotland and our people. I try my hand at photography, golf, curling and skiing with varying degrees of success. I will assist with welcoming people into the area, tour guiding and itinerary planning for 1/2 and whole day tours. I can include lowland walking, gardens, castles but what I particularly like is tailor-made days for small groups.

Raised in Germany, I have been very much at home in Scotland since my marriage in 1973. Spent more than two decades living on remote sporting estates with my (late) Highland (stalker/gamekeeper) husband and family in Argyll, the Borders and Caithness, working in broadcasting, marketing and as conference interpreter and technical translator. In latter years, living in beautiful Sutherland, I much enjoyed studying Scotland’s history, archaeology, flora and fauna in three degree courses. My heart is firmly committed to the Highlands, and I enjoy sharing some of its secrets with passengers from all over the world. My tours are peppered with topical snippets of information and grounded in thorough research. In partnership with Frank van Duivenbode, I can offer you tours of castle and botanic gardens, ancient woodlands, coastal lighthouses as well as tours of the legendary island of Skye.
Provided you do the preparatory genealogical research, we can take you on a custom-made trail of your clan or your ancestors. If you want to get married in the Scottish Highlands, we’re happy to explore some options with you.
