Born and bred on a family farm then educated in Moray I spent most of my life there although my work took me throughout the Grampian Region. I worked for over 35 years in different aspects of Scottish Law. I am passionate about encouraging visitors to see and experience the best (not necessarily the most expensive) about Scotland and our people. I try my hand at photography, golf, curling and skiing with varying degrees of success. I will assist with welcoming people into the area, tour guiding and itinerary planning for 1/2 and whole day tours. I can include lowland walking, gardens, castles but what I particularly like is tailor-made days for small groups.

Raised on the family farm on the West Coast of Scotland, I grew up with a love of the countryside and animals. Arriving in the Highlands in 1984 I started Highland Discovery Tours and since then have enjoyed showing people from all over the world Scotland’s historical landmarks along with special and lesser-known hidden places. As an experienced guide I am keen to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for the Highlands, the rich natural history along with traditional & modern culture. In my spare time I love renovating properties and furniture. I am also learning my most treasured possession – the Great Highland Bagpipe (out of earshot!). I am happy to take walking groups, coach trips, either driving or just guiding and create tailor-made itineraries. I look forward to meeting with you soon! I have a full PCV [bus] licence.

English: Raised in Germany, I have been very much at home in Scotland since 1973. I spent more than two decades living on remote sporting estates with my Highland (stalker/gamekeeper) husband and family in Argyll, the Borders and Caithness, working in broadcasting, marketing and as conference interpreter and technical translator. In latter years, living in beautiful Sutherland, I much enjoyed studying Scotland’s history, archaeology, flora and fauna in two degree courses. My heart is firmly in the Highlands, and I enjoy sharing some of its secrets with passengers from all over the world. My tours are peppered with topical snippets of information and grounded in thorough research. In partnership with Frank van Duivenbode (see this website), I can offer you tours of mainland lighthouses and/or visits to islands such as Skye and the bird island of Handa (boat transit at your own risk).

If you do the preparatory genealogical research, we can take you on a trail of your ancestors.

Susan Harper CPD
Based in : Braemar, Aberdeenshire
Languages spoken : ENGLISH

Half day / 1 day / year-round.

Specialities: Hiking, Nature, Scottish History.

I have lived in the Scottish highlands on and off for over 30 years. For 12 of those years I lived in Chamonix in the French Alps, for I am not only a Tour Guide, but I am also a Mountain Guide and was one of the first British woman to stand on the summit of Mount Everest. Needless to say I love mountains, but particularly Scottish ones. Wherever I travel in the world I always long to be back here, for the Scottish landscape is where my heart resides. In particular I love the Gaelic language and the way it gives meaning to the landscape through place-names, giving an insight into the people who lived on and worked this beautiful land over the centuries.
