Ian was brought up just South of Glasgow, he has had a long standing love affair with Scotland. From a young age Ian has had a enthusiasm for the adventurous side of the Scottish landscape and his twenties found him skiing, white water kayaking and walking in the hills of this beautiful country. His passion for Scottish culture came to fruition when he became part of a group called The White Cockade, a living history, re-enactment group who would travel the country bringing history alive to its audiences. Being introduced to this way of communicating Scotland’s history was to be a turning point in his life.
Ian’s love of the landscape has recently been reignited with his interest in photography. This new hobby is proving a great way of scouting out some truly sensational, less travelled spots, which he is only too happy to share with you.
His knowledge of Scottish history and culture from the Vikings, to the Scottish Wars of Independence, to the Jacobite Risings of 1745 is second to none. Couple this with a talent of making his love of Scotland feel fresh, fun and relevant makes him the ideal Personal Guide for your excursion.
His touring cars are a Mercedes Viano and a Hyundai i800. They carry up to seven passengers, these are roomy cars which are fully air conditioned. All of Scotland covered, Driver-guiding and ‘hop on’

HOSTGA

½ day / 1 day / driver-guiding including extended tours / year-round

Specialities:
Spectacular routes; ancient forts and magnificent castles; Neolithic cairns, standing stones from various ages and a trail of the amazing carved stones of the Pictish era; ancient woodlands and forests; native animals, birds and plants.

I was born in Hastings (south coast of England) to a Dutch father and English mother. Being very keen on walking and camping in the Scottish hills, I managed to get my first job in the Highlands in 1972 and never looked back. The Scottish Highlands is my chosen home and I can never get enough of exploring its hills and mountains, river glens and straths carved out by the ice age. I love the fascinating combination of sandy beaches, breath-taking cliffs and wide-open horizons. Thanks to our changeable weather, it’s never dull here.

I carved out a career in tree surgery and forestry work which has given me wide and varied insights into Scottish land use and a keen interest in ancient trees. Owing to its relative lack of industrial development, the Scottish Highlands is an area rich in archaeological sites many of which are missed by the uninitiated on the usual tourist trail. Although not an expert in geology, I have an abiding interest in the rock formations that make up our countryside. One of my hobbies is sailing and I have enjoyed many splendid coastal views from my boat. It won’t surprise you to hear that I love reading non-fiction literature about maritime history, whilst my favourite novelist is Patrick O’Brian.
With my partner, Brigitte Geddes, I can take you on spectacular tours of the Highlands including Skye. We can also arrange castle tours, garden tours and Outlander tours for you or take you on a trip exploring the history of your clan. Provided you do the preparatory genealogical research, we can take you on a trail of your very own ancestors.
If you are interested, we can give you lots of information on country life and the wild outdoors introducing you to our dramatic mountains, and our fascinating range of plants, trees and animals some of which we might spot on our way. I think that it is also important to give you moments of calm enabling you to enjoy the memorable sounds and sights of the Highlands and Islands.

I learned German over a period of 7 years as a soldier in the British army in Germany between 1965 and 1972. I am proud of our Highland heritage and culture and knowledgeable about its current social and economic situations.
I am an avid skier, a keen golfer and enjoy most outdoor activities. My interests include postage stamp collecting, historic buildings, my 5 grandchildren and classical music.

STGA

½ day / 1 day / extended; driver-guiding
Specialities: Wildlife and Walking

I am Lowlander by birth but a Highlander by inclination. I started my guiding career in 1995 with two years at Aigas Field Centre, just outside Inverness. I continued guiding groups in my various jobs after that. I moved back to the Highlands in 2005 and in March 2006 I started Red Kite Tours.
My main interest is wildlife guiding, but soon after I started guiding I realised no wildlife in Scotland lives beyond the influence of people. So I needed to understand the history, folklore, geology and place names of the Highlands to successfully interpret the exceptional landscape and wildlife found here to my guests.

HOSTGA

Half- and full day coach tours. Walking tours. Year round.

I was born and brought up in a small crofting village near Plockton and have always expressed a great passion for my home, the Highlands of Scotland. After studying at Aberdeen University and travelling around different countries, I settled back in the Highlands, now living on a Caithness farm with my husband and two children. I have worked as a couuntryside ranger in the Caithness area for the last 16 years. This has given me valuable insight into the local wildlife, history and culture of the area.
